Frequently Asked Questions
How does the one-time calibration work?
Pick a cruising gear (usually top gear), settle at a steady road speed, then read the exact RPM off your dash tachometer and tap to log. TachoSpeed records that single (RPM, GPS speed) pair. Because gear ratios are linear within a gear, that one point is enough for the app to derive your engine RPM from any future GPS speed.
Why is the RPM dial wrong when I shift to a different gear?
The dial assumes you’re still in the gear you calibrated, because each gear has its own ratio. The digital GPS speed in the middle of the gauge stays accurate in any gear — only the RPM scale and needle position depend on the calibrated gear.
Can I store calibrations for more than one gear?
Not in version 1.0. TachoSpeed keeps a single calibration to keep the app dead simple. If you want the dial to read in a different gear, open Settings and tap Recalibrate.
My GPS speed seems off.
GPS speed needs a clear view of the sky and a few seconds to settle. The status row on the tachometer screen shows the current GPS accuracy — if it’s “Acquiring GPS” or showing poor accuracy, give it a moment or move out from under heavy tree cover or a steel roof. The app also lightly smooths the needle so it doesn’t jitter; the digital readout reflects the raw GPS value.
Does the app work offline?
Yes. TachoSpeed makes no network requests of any kind. GPS works without a cellular signal.
How do I change the dial range or redline?
Open Settings (gear icon, top of the tachometer screen). You can set the dial maximum from 4,000 to 12,000 RPM in 1,000 RPM steps, and the redline anywhere from 3,000 RPM up to your dial maximum.
How do I switch between MPH and KM/H?
Settings → Units. The change is instant and applies to both the road-speed scale on the dial and the digital readout.
Is it safe to use while driving?
Please don’t operate the app while driving. Mount the phone where you can glance at it the way you would a dash gauge, or have a passenger hold it. The app shows a one-time safety notice the first time you use it.
